Tales of a Technology Omnivore

Off-topic: I need a new doorknob… ON-TOPIC!: NYU installing a new security feature: doors that can be remote locked to prevent intruders from harming students

I am a huge fan of convergence. I want everything in one device: mp3 player, phone, camera, calendar/pda, internet, etc. The truth is, this is not because I enjoy being futurist or cutting edge. No, it’s because I LOSE everything. So when I read this article about how the reality of keyless entries is here, I start dreaming of the day when I don’t have to carry keys!  Doorknobs that use fingerprint technology (or Biometrics as they call it) have actually become affordable.  $169 for a deadbolt door?  Sign me up!  But would you lock your front door with it and feel safe that your stuff was safe?  What do you think?  (Yes, I am asking for responses — talk to me (echo echo echo))

Just as I was debating the Off-education technology topic the NY Post saved the day with an article about a new security feature they’re installing to keep their students safe.  At the touch of a button they’ll be able to lock all doors at their most heavily trafficked buildings.  The idea is to prevent crazed college students with guns from having carte blanche access to innocent lives.  Great idea.  Can’t help but wonder how this can go wrong (fire and doors locking?).  Would the fire department permit this?
